Television has been with us for more than 50 years, and is among the most pervasive and widely used technologies on the planet. Through much of this time period, TV has evolved in a gradual fashion, from small flickering black and white boxes, to colour, to bigger screens, to cable and satellite signals offering an overwhelming choice of programming. As we begin the 21st century, the next generation of TV is now upon us, encompassing the full rollout of digital TV programming, interactive features and the cross-over of video programming to the Internet. Video is already widely available on the web, but this represents just the beginning of what will be offered over the coming years as computer speeds increase and broadband Internet access becomes more prevalent.
